Haryana plan for canal in NCR region

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government on Wednesday decided to construct a 64-km-long canal with an initial capacity of 500 cusecs of water at a cost of Rs. 213 crores to meet the needs of water in the National Capital Region (NCR) areas falling in the State.

Stating this after chairing a meeting, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said the canal had been planned in view of the projected requirement of drinking water and that of industrial sector up to 2021 in the NCR falling in Haryana.

The canal would take off from the Delhi branch at Kakroi village in Sonepat district and run up to Budhera in Gurgaon district. It would be completed in three years.

Mr. Hooda said that later the capacity of the canal would be enhanced to 800 cusecs. As the demand of water would take time to develop and the water of Yamuna being spared from July to October, the capacity of the new canal would be used to recharge the ground water.
