CHANDIGARH: Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Chander Mohan on Wednesday refuted allegations levelled by Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) President Simranjit Singh Mann about "harassment of Sikhs and other weaker sections of society" in Haryana.

Participating in "Meet-the-Press'' programme at the Chandigarh Press Club here, Mr. Mohan charged that Mr. Mann was making "politically motivated'' statements in view of the ensuing Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections. He said that a commitment had been made in the election manifesto of the Congress for constituting a separate Shiromani Gurudwara Parbhandak Committee in Haryana and this would be honoured.

Mr. Mohan, who is the eldest son of former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal, described the agreement between the State Government and Reliance Industries for setting up of a multi-crore Special Economic Zone as a step in the right direction. He dismissed as "ill-founded'' speculation that the ambitious project would not generate enough employment and revenue for the Government.

While stating that he was "present'' when the agreement was signed, he said it would be beneficial for the people of Haryana. Asked about the opposition to the Reliance deal by his younger brother Kuldeep Bishnoi, the Member of Parliament from Bhiwani, he asserted that it was possible that the latter might not have understood what it was all about.

While stating that he had not discussed the matter with his brother, he reiterated that he was in favour of the deal as the Government had deliberated all the pros and cons about setting up of Special Economic Zones.

He clarified that there were no "differences'' in his family on any issue. "I am proud of my father for serving the State with great zeal and dedication and making it prosperous and Kuldeep is also working in the larger interest of the party in his own way,'' he said, adding that his family would always remain in the Congress.
