State police trying to shield some accused in the murder case: petition

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court will hear on September 25 a petition seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the death of Professor H. S. Sabharwal in Ujjain after he was allegedly assaulted by some students recently.

During the mention time on Tuesday, a three-judge Bench comprising Justices B.N. Agrawal, P.P. Naolekar and Lokeshwar Singh Panta declined an early hearing of the petition filed by Professor Sabharwal's son, Himanshu, and said it would be listed on September 25 in the normal course. The petitioner said he was compelled to approach the apex court as the police were trying to shield some accused.

The petition said the State Government was not ready to accept that the victim died as a result of the assault by union leaders. Instead, leaders of the ruling party in Madhya Pradesh were issuing statements in favour of the accused.

The police had not registered the case of murder against the accused after Professor Sabharwal died on August 26 and the murder charge was included only after the case was transferred to the CID, the plea said.
