High Court gets two more judges

Judges strength has gone up to 45

CHENNAI: The Centre has appointed two more Judges to the Madras High Court. Two service judges — P.R. Shiva Kumar, Chief Judge of the Small Causes Court here, and G. Rajasuriya, Principal District Judge in Cuddalore — were elevated to the High Court on Wednesday in that order of seniority.

Mr. Shiva Kumar was born in May 1954 at Pethanvalasai in Sivaganga district. After completing graduation from The American College in Madurai, he did his law in the Government Law College in Pondicherry. Later, he completed his Masters Degree in Law. Enrolled in the Bar in October 1980, he was appointed direct Subordinate Judge in 1989. He was promoted as District Judge in June 1997. He has served in Erode, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Krishnagiri and Coimbatore districts. Mr. Shiva Kumar is the 10th Chief Judge of the Small Causes Court to be elevated to the High Court.

Born in August 1951, Mr. Rajasuriya belonged to the first batch of the Government Law College in the Union Territory of Pondicherry. He obtained his M.L. degree in criminal law and criminology from Madras University. He was enrolled in the Bar in 1975. He belongs to the Pondicherry Judicial Service. He also worked as Deputy Director of Prosecution for two years in Pondicherry, and thereafter worked as Law Officer of Government undertakings in Pondicherry for four years. He became the Principal District Judge of Cuddalore in May 2005.

They will be sworn in by Chief Justice A.P. Shah on September 17.

With their inclusion, the sitting strength of judges in the court has gone up to 45, as against the sanctioned strength of 49.
