Man arrested on cheating charge

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: A 53-year-old man A.M. Jahabar alias Jaffar of Prakasam Salai, Broadway was arrested on charges of cheating and intimidation here on Wednesday.

The City Crime Branch police said T. Subramani of Soolaimedu and Mohandas had reportedly paid Rs 1.50 lakh to Jaffar, who allegedly promised them a fabulous job in Dubai.

After receiving the money, Jaffar directed them to go to Bangalore and meet an agent Ansari who would take care of them. Ansari arranged for their travel to Dubai on a tourist visa. On arrival, there was no one to receive them, as had been promised, they stated in the complaint.

Despite efforts to contact the person named by Ansari and Jaffar, they could not do so.

The two returned to India with great difficulty after undergoing mental agony and untold hardships. They filed a complaint with the Commissioner of Police Letika Saran who directed the CCB to probe the case.

After investigation, the police arrested Jaffar and remanded him to custody.

Another case

In another case, the CCB police arrested a woman identified as Shameem Banu (55) and her associate Sheik Imran alias Tahir Wahid (55) of Mumbai in Chennai city on Tuesday on charges of cheating 28 persons hailing from Illayankudi in Sivaganga district by promising them overseas jobs.

According to a CCB press note issued here on Wednesday, the two reportedly took Rs 23.80 lakh. Neither did they get them the jobs nor did they return the money.
