Power shutdown

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended on September 15 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for maintenance work in parts of Mandaveli and Taramani, including Mosque Street, TSV Koil Street, Gandhi Mandapam Road, Ponniamman Koil Street, Yadhava Street and Erikarai Street.

BSNL offer

BSNL Tamil Nadu Circle has announced an extension for its lifetime-prepaid customers, who have not recharged their accounts within the prescribed time. Cards will have to be recharged once in six months for at least Rs. 50 or the numbers will expire. However, connections that have expired will be reactivated with zero balance from September 12 to 18, during which subscribers can recharge their cards.

Madras varsity courses

The Madras University Students Advisory Bureau will conduct short-term courses in air ticketing and travel management, communication skills and a preparatory course for the SSC-Tax Assistant Examination, to be held on October 8. The courses are free for SC/ST students. Call 25392255 for details.

Thyroid health camp

The Madras Isotope Laboratory in Chintadripet will hold an awareness camp on thyroid disorders on September 17 and 18. The camp will offer basic thyroid test and consultation at a concessional rate of Rs. 110. The last date for registration is September 16. Call 98844 02604/ 05 for details.

Bonsai training

The Urban Horticulture Development Centre will organise a one-day training programme on `Growing Bonsai at Home' on September 22. The course will cover selection of plants, pots and medium. Vishu Kallappan, president, South Indian Bonsai Association, will be the resource person. The course fee is Rs. 300.

Gita contest

The Egmore Samskrt School will hold a Gita recitation competition on January 26, 27 and 28, 2007. To commemorate the golden jubilee, a special competition in all the 18 chapters will be held on January 26. Applications should be sent by December 31. For details, dial 26424721 or 42027151.

Eye camp

Hindu Mission Hospital organised a free eye camp at Perumbakkam on Wednesday. Around 140 patients were screened and 30 patients referred for free surgery.

Health programmes

GSS Jain College for Women organised a dental health camp for students. A medical team from Ragas Dental College screened the students. The college also held a chikungunya awareness programme.

Office-bearers elected

A. Basheer Ahmed has been elected as the Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Chapter of the Travel Agents' Federation of India (TAFI) for 2006-08

The other office-bearers are H.M. Talha Rahaman, secretary and A.S. Sikkandar Batcha, treasurer. N. Ramji, Past Chairman of TAFI will be the National Committee Member.
