MAHABUBNAGAR: District Collector V. Usha Rani has said the district administration was implementing national rural employment guarantee scheme effectively and that 99 per cent of migration of labour from the district was arrested. Briefing Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy about the prevailing seasonal conditions in a video conference on Wednesday, she said some 1,50,000 labourers were provided employment under NREGS during this season. She said due to abnormal increase in the land rates, the villagers and labourers were not showing interest in taking part in the NREGS works. The Collector also said there was inordinate delay in payment of wages to labourers through the system of post office accounts and urged the Chief Minister for an alternative system.
Average rainfall
Referring to the seasonal conditions, Ms. Rani said that against the average rainfall of 604mm, only 214 mm was received and 94 per cent of cropping area was covered with encouraging rains received in the beginning of the season. Due to prolonged dry spells, jowar, castor, redgram and other ID crops raised in 2.30 lakh acres had withered, while various standing crops in 2.10 lakh acres were weak with no yield expected from them. She further informed that a contingent plan has been evolved to meet the present seasonal crises. The video conference was attended by Joint Collector Vara Prasad, Joint Director (Agriculture) Nagappa and other officials.
