Two expos offer traditional Indian jewellery, toys, textiles

CHENNAI: The handicrafts exhibition hosted by Crafts of India in the city depicts the traditional arts and handiworks of India. Be it traditional Indian jewellery, toys and textiles to handcrafted furniture and icons. About 50 artisans across the country participated at the expo inaugurated by classical singer Sudha Raghunathan on Wednesday at Corporation Community Hall on C.P. Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet.

Traditional games sets such as board games, home linen and paintings are available. The fair also showcases classical and tribal art forms of the country with live demonstration by craftspersons and puppet shows. The exhibition is on till September 24. For details, contact 93808 64265.

Artisans from Orissa, Rajasthan and Assam are here in Chennai to showcase their artistic skills by participating in the handicrafts and handlooms fair at Srushti premises on Chamiers Road, Alwarpet. Handiwork lovers may find traditional textiles including cotton ikat saris from Sambalpur that have won national awards at the expo. Organised by Srushti of Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Artisans Welfare Association, the expo would have salwar materials with mirror work and phulkari embroidery. Besides a wide variety of home linen, items made of black and white brass metal, Rajasthan jewellery, wood furniture and wall hangings would also be available. A 10 per cent discount would be offered. The fair is open between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. till Sunday.
