WALKERS' PLIGHT: Pedestrians use the road as there is no proper footpath on Trichy Road in the city. - Photo: M. Periasamy
COIMBATORE: The 1.9-km stretch of Trichy Road from Sungam junction to Government Hospital is used by many pedestrians - office goers, schoolchildren, and visitors to the commercial establishments. But, not much attention has been given to them as the road lacks a footpath. Though the average width of the road is 30 metres it varies in some places. Thus, it does not provide uniform space throughout the stretch, on either side, for a footpath. It has a pedestrian path near the Government Hospital and for a short distance beyond the hospital (towards Sungam). This space is, however, occupied most of the time by alms seekers. People waiting for buses also occupy the footpath. Vehicles are parked on the road and walkers have no choice but to walk on the road. The stretch has no special provision to help the pedestrians cross the road. And, the width of the road gets reduced in many places because vehicles are parked on the road sides. According to a Corporation Official, infrastructure such as strengthening and widening of roads in the city and footpaths will be taken up under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
