KOCHI: A section of landowners at Brahmapuram have demanded higher prices for their holdings to be taken over for the proposed solid-waste management plant of the city corporation. Representatives of the landowners told mediapersons that they would not hand over the land according to the earlier agreement with the corporation, as the term of the consent letter had expired. The land value in the area had gone up considerably following the decision to set up the Smart City project and prices lower than the market value could not be accepted, said K.A. Abdul Basheer, chairman of the action committee of landowners. Moreover, a tourist project was coming up. According to the action committee leaders, the market value was now around Rs. 1.15 lakh a cent. For filled-up land, it was Rs. 80,000 and paddy fields Rs. 50,000.
Corporation stand
The corporation authorities said the price could not be enhanced. "If the landowners refuse to part with their holdings, the corporation will go ahead with acquisition procedures," said Mayor Mercy Williams. The procedures were halfway through. The corporation had not stopped them, she said.
