THE CLASSES for first semester BE courses were inaugurated at PES Institute of Technology here by R. Natarajan, former Chairman of AICTE, and Kaushik Mukherjee, Principal Secretary, Higher Education, Karnataka. Dr. Natarajan told the fresh entrants "doctors are not the only people serving humanity. Engineers have contributed abundantly for the general good of people. Engineers today must possess the `four Ls' of learnability, life-long learning, listernerability and laughability to be more employable". Mr. Mukherjee told stu dents that life was not a single line queue but a six-lane highway with opportunities for all. PES Group chairman M.R. Doreswamy spoke about the need for greater interaction between the Government and private sector to achieve more success in the field of education and make higher education possible for more young people.
Talent search
Sri Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain College conducted an event, "Corporate EX-PRO", for its students. Each team was given a product or topic and expected to conduct the necessary market research and prepare a presentation. Stalls to showcase the specific products were provided. The objective was to create awareness and help students understand the corporate world, enhance their presentation skills and the opportunity to understand the importance of working as a team. Evaluation criteria included concept and content, creativity, presentation skills and body language. Third semester B.Com "E" emerged winners with their show on insurance and B.Com "F" came second by displaying their knowledge about education. In the services sector, first semester B.Com "C" were placed first with airlines and second Semester B. Com "B" came second with "gyms and fitness".
Seminar
The Seri Programme unit under the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), in collaboration with Centre for Social Action of Christ College, a student movement for a just and humane society, held a seminar on "Rainfed sericulture a tool for poverty reduction". The main aim was to promote rain-fed sericulture on a sustainable basis. Adiran Marti, Deputy Country Director, SDC India; H. Bhaskar, Secretary, Central Silk Board; and P.C. Bhaskar, Distinguished Fellow, M.S. Swaminathan Foundation, spoke.
VTU workshop
Visvesvaraya Technological University, in collaboration with ARM Embedded Technologies Pvt. Ltd, Bangalore, held a one-day workshop for faculty of affiliated engineering colleges on "ARM Processor Technology". William Hohl, University Relations Manager, ARM Inc, explained the continuing evolution of electronic devices becoming more digital and intelligent had escalated rapidly. VTU Vice-Chancellor K. Balaveera Reddy said the workshop was organised keeping in view that ARM trained engineering were increasingly required by industry.
National workshop
Home Science Department of Mount Carmel College, in collaboration with Social Security Association of India, will conduct a national workshop on "Social security for women in unorganised sector" on September 15 and 16. Justice V. Gopal Gowda of the Karnataka High Court will inaugurate the event.
