dated September 15, 1956: US against use of force

The US Secretary of State, Mr. John Foster Dulles, told a press conference in Washington on September 13 that the US had no intention of shooting its way through the Suez Canal if Egypt should try to block the passage of ships proceeding under authority of the proposed Canal Users' Association. If Egypt should use physical force to prevent the passage of American vessels through the Canal, the US would send these ships around the Cape of Good Hope. Mr. Dulles added that he had not got the impression from the recent speech of the British Prime Minister, Sir Anthony Eden, on the plans for the Canal Users' Association that he (Sir Anthony) had made any pledge for Britain to shoot its way through the Canal.
