This Day That Age
The Home Minister, Mr. G.B. Pant, said in the Lok Sabha on September 13 that he expected the general elections to be held in February or March 1957. He added that he was not in a position to make a definite announcement as it was the function of the Election Commission to announce the dates. Mr. Pant was replying to Mr. A.K. Gopalan, leader of the Communist group, who had sought information on elections. Mr. Gopalan said certain press reports had stated that elections were likely to be put off till 1958. There were rumours in the lobbies also. Mr. Pant replied that the Government were not free to announce the dates as the Election Commission was the competent authority to do so.
