Rarely do policemen receive bouquets for their service, especially after alleged custodial deaths and tortures at police stations. However, a few residents of Panniyankara have appreciated efforts of the city police in preventing burglaries during the Onam vacation. P.T.S. Unni, one of the residents, said the police had been vigilant during the Onam week. At least six families living near N.M. Upper Primary School had informed the police that they would be away during Onam. "This year, no burglaries took place in the neighbourhood. Patrolling by police had also prevented anti-social elements from carrying out any activities," said Mr. Unni. Panniyankara Sub-Inspector K. Narayanan and his team used to visit the neighbourhood regularly and ask other residents if they needed any service, Mr. Unni said. "We are honoured to hear citizens commenting about our service instead of always complaining of our lapses," Mr. Narayanan said.
