It was a different kind of gathering. All those who spoke at the gathering held at Kannur on Monday evening took a trip down memory lane recalling their past association with Sukumar Azhikode. He was a guest who was perfectly at home at the gathering hosted by his friends, classmates, students and relatives in his native district. The small hall where they gathered had an air of camaraderie and informality about it. Even Prof. Azhikode, who was familiar with audiences eager to experience his elocutionary power, appeared to have been touched by the initiative of his friends and well wishers. "This gathering is relevant as it is organised at a time when true friendships are becoming irrelevant," he told them. His childhood days at Azhikode here, his school and college days and his past experiences flashed in his speech and in the words of those who spoke there. His friends, who organised the gathering as a gesture of their love for him, were touched by the spirit of friendship that the function sought to emphasise.
