Government to promote IT, IT-enabled services

Special Correspondent

New IT policy to implement e-governance

Pondicherry: Lt. Governor Mukut Mithi has told the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Pondicherry, that the administration would soon announce steps to promote Information Technology (IT) and IT-enabled Services (ITES) in the Union Territory by establishing an IT park. The Government would create a conducive environment for the software business, he said. Addressing a meeting of the CII on Wednesday, Mr. Mithi said the administration had drawn up schemes to set up a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), develop the port, establish infrastructure and promote public private partnership.

It would also come out with plans to ensure augmented drinking water supply and construction of a fishing harbour in Karaikal as well as a textile park.

A new IT policy, to be evolved soon, would adopt e-governance to increase efficiency and transparency in Government departments. The Lt. Governor said there the government would work with the CII to create a proper environment for industrial activity.

A release from the CII said on Thursday that Mr. Mithi had announced that financial assistance would be given to small and medium enterprises participating in the CII sponsored SME cluster project to improve internal standards, skills and to set up a convention centre to hold industrial expositions.

A separate power corporation will be set up to improve power supply. Speedy sanction of power feasibility certificates will be made available and natural gas will be procured from Andhra Pradesh for gas-based power plant in Yanam. Director of Industries and Commerce Jayanta Kumar Ray highlighted various features of programmes to develop infrastructure.

Chairman of CII Pondicherry P. Sekhar and its Vice Chairman C. Chinnasamy were among those who attended the meeting.
