Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: The JIPMER Anti Conversion Action Committee (JACAC) comprising of representatives of political parties, trade unions, associations of Government employees and leaders of public opinion has called for a 12-hour bandh from 6 a.m. on September 26. It is to mark their opposition to the Centre's decision to confer autonomy on JIPMER. The convenor of the Committee, T. Murugan, told a meeting of employees at the end of a rally on Thursday that the action committee would hold public meetings in semi urban and rural areas from September 18 to 20. It would also hold a demonstration in front of the Head Post Office a few days before the bandh to condemn the Union Cabinet's decision. He said autonomy would be bad for JIPMER, poor patients and students seeking admission in JIPMER. The Centre should scrap the decision without delay, he said. Meanwhile, a top police officer told newsmen on Thursday that cases had been registered against 70 employees, including staff nurses, who gheraoed the Director of the institute, K S V K Subba Rao on Wednesday. The JIPMER management had complained that Mr. Rao had been confined to his room and prevented from discharging his duty. Identification of the staff was being done now on the basis of the complaint for follow up action, he added.
