HUBLI: Four persons, including three teenaged girls of a family, were washed away when a downpour resulted in a flash-flood in the Hulabi Halla (stream) near Kotumachagi village in Gadag taluk on Wednesday evening. The victims have been identified as Basamma Yallappa Jaggala (38), her daughters Shekhavva Yallappa Jaggala (15) and Madavva Yallappa Jaggala (14) and a relative Savita Irappa Jaggala. While one body was found on Wednesday night, the other three were recovered on Thursday. The body of one girl was found 10 km from the spot of the drowning. According to eyewitnesses, the tragedy occurred when the victims who were returning after work in their fields were crossing the stream. The sudden gush of water took them by surprise and they were washed away. Four other members of the family escaped.
Compensation
On Thursday Kalakappa Bandi, Ron MLA, visited the relatives of the dead. He announced a compensation of Rs. 50,000 each to the kin of the victims under the Natural Calamity Fund. Gadag Zilla Panchayat president N.S. Kengar and vice-president Renuka Basavaradder visited the village. The former Ron MLA G.S. Patil gave Rs. 10,000 as temporary relief to the head of the family.
Mass cremation
After the post-mortem was completed, villagers conducted a mass cremation. Nargund in Gadag district registered a record rainfall of 15 cm on Tuesday night. Owing to the heavy downpour many houses were damaged and rainwater entered office buildings.
