Delusional world

This refers to the editorial "Mr. Bush's delusional world" (Sept. 13) which lays bare the grim situation in which the U.S. and rest of the world find themselves. Starting with an ill-prepared campaign against terror, the Bush administration has committed a series of blunders. The world, particularly the Americans, should wake up to the dangers misguided and misinformed agencies pose to international peace. Indeed, the views expressed in the editorial could not have been more appropriate.

The editorial rightly criticises the invasion of Iraq. But what about the invasion of Afghanistan? Even if the Taliban regime offered a safe haven to the perpetrators of the 9/11 attack, the U.S. should have presented the case before the United Nations Security Council and sought remedy rather than unlawfully invading a sovereign nation. By attacking and illegally occupying sovereign nations, the U.S. has proved, as Noam Chomsky has rightly pointed out, to be a leading terrorist state.

After 9/11, almost the entire world rallied round George W. Bush as he vowed to capture Osama bin Laden. He bombarded many places in Afghanistan on the pretext of smoking him and his associates out. Five years later, Osama is still at large. In the meanwhile, Mr. Bush attacked Iraq to cover his failure. Even after huge loss of lives, he does not seem to have learnt any lessons.

The editorial underlines the discontent of Americans with the present regime. It says over 70 per cent of the people are unhappy with the state of affairs. While the opinion poll finding is heartening, such polls and surveys are not completely reliable if the past is any indication.

Murali Krishna,
Bangalore
