Corrections and clarifications

  • What is the expansion of Ifra, asks a reader, referring to the report "Role seen for citizen journalists in newspapers" (September 14, 2006). Ifra had its beginnings in 1961 as INCA or the International Newspaper Colour Association by three founding members from Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom, to promote and improve colour printing in newspapers. In 1970, it was renamed as Ifra or the INCA-FIEJ Research Association, whereby "INCA" stands for "International Newspaper Colour Association" and "FIEJ" stands for "Fédération Internationale des Editeurs de Journaux". Today, the name "Ifra" stands by itself.

  • The caption of the accompanying photograph in "1,406 star tortoises seized" (Tamil Nadu, September 14, 2006) was: "Seizure: Live star tortoise seized by Customs officials at the [Chennai] international airport on Wednesday." As a reader points out, it should have been "Live red-eared slider turtle", as mentioned in the text. This species was found — there was also a seizure of star tortoises — after the officials intercepted a passenger coming from Singapore and found 1,982 of them in his baggage.

  • "Police took into custody a person suspecting his involvement in the largescale seizure of rocket launchers and ammunition at Giddalur in Prakasam district ... ." was the sentence in "One person held at Giddalur" (Andhra Pradesh, September 9, 2006, page 3). A reader points out that the act of seizure was done by the police and not by the suspect, so he cannot be said to be involved in it. And in "Huge arms haul in Prakasam too" (Andhra Pradesh, September 9, 2006, page 3) the sentence was: "In Hyderabad, Home Minister K. Jana Reddy complimented the Intelligence officials for altering the local police ... ." It should have been "alerting".

  • A reader points out that the caption of the standalone combination picture "Past & Present" (PropertyPlus, Chennai, September 9, 2006, page 7) was incorrect in a detail. It was: "A study in contrast: Both traditional "horse carts" and motor vehicles compete near Dams Road, at Wellington Mount Road Junction in Madras ... ." It should have been "bullock carts".
