DA hike for government employees, teachers

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday announced a five per cent hike in dearness allowance of Government employees and teachers. This follows a decision of the Centre and will be effective July 1, 2006. The move will mean an expenditure of Rs.497.53 crore to the government. — Special Correspondent

Chosen for Anna awards

CHENNAI: As many as 100 policemen, 10 fire and rescue service personnel, seven prison service staff, three home guard personnel and two from the fingerprint bureau have been selected for this year's Anna Awards.

The awards are announced on the occasion of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai's birth anniversary.

Two personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services have been selected posthumously for the Chief Minister's bravery awards. — Special Correspondent

Scheme for poor pregnant women

CHENNAI: The Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Financial Aid Scheme for poor women during maternity will be launched on September 15. The Government has set apart Rs.100 crore for this scheme for the current year.

This was one of the promises made by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in its election manifesto. The assistance will be for poor women over 19 years for their first two deliveries. They will receive Rs.1000 each month from the seventh month of pregnancy. A total of Rs.6000 will be given to each woman. Three instalments would be given ahead of delivery and three after delivery.

To be eligible, the annual family income should be below Rs.12,000. — Special Correspondent

AIFB strategy for local body polls soon

CHENNAI: All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) State unit chief M. Karthik on Thursday said he would not rule out the possibility of the party forging an electoral understanding with All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam for the local body elections.

Replying to queries on the AIFB's strategy for the local body poll, Mr. Karthik said the State committee meeting, to be held in Madurai shortly, would announce its decision.

Asked if the AIFB would join the Democratic People's Alliance led by the AIADMK to face the civic elections, Mr. Karthik said, "Anything is possible, as we do not hold a grudge against anybody." Pooh-poohing criticism against him for sharing platforms with leaders of different parties, he said as long as one remained faithful to one's ideology, there was nothing wrong in meeting functionaries of other parties.

The process of revamping the AIFB's district committees and the State committee as per the national leadership of the party was nearing completion, he added. — Special Correspondent

Special trains

CHENNAI: Southern Railway is to run following special trains to clear extra rush of passengers.

Train no.0164 Chennai Central - Lokmanya Tilak Terminus will leave Chennai Central at 11.35 p.m. on September 15 (Friday) and reach Lokmanya Tilak Terminus at 5.30 a.m. on September 17 (Sunday).

The composition of the train will be 10 sleeper class, 4 general second class and 2 luggage-cum-brake van coaches. Train no.0653 Chennai Central - Vadodara special will leave Chennai Central at 11.30 p.m. on September 16 (Saturday) and arrive Vadodara at 11.30 a.m. on September 18 (Monday).

The composition of the train will be 10 sleeper class, 6 general second class and 2 luggage-cum-brake van coaches. Advance reservation for the above trains will commence on September 15. — Special Correspondent

Woman ends life

Nagercoil: A woman committed suicide by consuming sleeping dose on Thursday. According to police, Balal, wife of Ariya Perumal of Suchindrum, took this extreme step, as she could not repay the amount borrowed from a private money- lender.

Keralite dies in accident

Nagercoil: Saki Kumar of Neyytinkarai in Kerala was killed on the spot and Sasi Kumar Nair, his friend, sustained injuries in a road accident on Thursday. According to sources, Saki Kumar was going towards Thuckalay along with Sasi Kumar Nair in an autorickshaw when it collided head on with a jeep at Manali. Saki Kumar died on the spot in the accident and Sasi Kumar Nair, who was critically injured, was admitted to the Government medical college hospital at Asaripallam. — Staff Reporter

CM thanked

NAGAPATTINAM: The Nagapattinam District Retired Officials Association thanked Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for fulfilling all the demands of the pensioners and restoring the lost concessions.

In its special general body meeting on Sunday, the association appealed to the Chief Minister to consider increasing the Pongal bonus from Rs.150 to Rs.300 and providing festival advance.

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 110.48 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 8,292 cusecs and the outflow, 17,609 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Boy killed in accident

ERODE: A schoolboy was killed in an road accident on Thursday. According to police, Jeevanandham (7), son of Eswaran of Muthanpatty near Ammapet, was waiting for a bus at Koneripatty, when a lorry hit and killed him on the spot. Ammapet police registered a case against the lorry driver. - Staff Reporter

Arrested

Hosur: The Hosur police on Thursday arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with series of thefts in Hosur and Denkanikottai areas. According to the police, a team was conducting vehicle checks at Panchapalli when they noticed Rajappa of Bangalore moving under suspicious circumstances. Interrogation revealed that Rajappa was involved in a series of thefts in Krishnagiri, Hosur and Denkanikottai over the past two months. Stolen goods, including 32 sovereigns of jewellery, were recovered from him. The Denkanikottai police have registered a case.

Arrack seized

Hosur: About 2,800 sachets of arrack worth Rs. 25,000 which was being smuggled in a car from Karnataka was seized by the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) police at Kamanthotti, within the HUDCO police station limits, here on Thursday. According to the police, a team was conducting vehicle checks at Kamanthotti when they intercepted a car and seized the arrack. The PEW police have registered a case. - Staff Reporter

Disruption in water supply

SALEM: Water supply to the Salem city will remained disrupted on September 16 and 17 due to the maintenance works announced by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board in the Mettur area on September 16.
