THALASSERY: Tension gripped Thalassery town and nearby areas following attacks on Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and National Development Front (NDF) workers by suspected Communist Party of India (Marxist) activists in separate incidents near here on Thursday. The police said the trouble began when a group of suspected CPI(M) workers hurled country-made bombs at RSS men engaged in the preparation for the Sree Krishna Jayanthi celebration at Komathupara under the Thalassery police station limits in the early hours of Thursday. An RSS worker, K.V. Shabarinath (24), suffered injuries from shrapnel from the bombs. He has been admitted to a government hospital here. In retaliatory attacks that followed, two autorickshaws were damaged in the area. In another incident, an NDF worker, A.V. Shabeer (20), suffered serious stab injuries in an attack by suspected CPI(M) workers while he was distributing the Thejas daily, Malayalam mouthpiece of the NDF, on Kallayi Road in New Mahe under the Thalassery police station. He has been admitted to a cooperative hospital here. In view of the tension following the incidents, three platoons of armed police personnel were deployed in the areas where the incidents occurred.
