`Government surrenders before managements'

Committee finding on corruption ignored, says Karthikeyan

  • Non-committal on cancellation of entrance test
  • Says Government should apologise to the students

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Deputy leader of the Congress Legislature Party G. Karthikeyan has said the Government has surrendered before the managements of self-financing professional colleges.

Addressing a press conference here Thursday, Mr. Karthikeyan said though the P.A. Mohammed Committee found corruption and irregularities in the entrance tests conducted by private medical college managements, the Government agreed to ignore the finding. This was a serious matter, as it would damage the credibility of the quasi-judicial commission.

Mr. Karthikeyan, however, was non-committal when asked whether the Congress or the UDF would demand cancellation of the entrance test conducted by the managements based on the findings of the committee.

He said `political haughtiness' and adamant stand of the Government led to the present situation in the higher education sector. Many students sought admissions outside the State because of the imbroglio in the State. This went against the original objective of starting self-financing colleges by the previous Government. The Government should apologise to the students for the situation.

Mr. Karthikeyan said the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) was facing disintegration because senior leader K. Karunakaran acted solely based on the love for his son. As a former associate, it troubled him to see Karunakaran's lack of confidence and energy.

Mr. Karthikeyan said Mr. Karunakaran, who had sworn allegiance to India Gandhi, was now joining hands with Pawar who challenged her daughter-in-law Sonia Gandhi.
