We are monitoring dam: Karunanidhi

CHENNAI : The Tamil Nadu Government was closely monitoring the operation and maintenance of the Mullai Periyar dam to ensure the safety and interests of the people of both the States, Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi said in a letter to Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, on Thursday. Seeking to reassure Kerala's apprehensions on the safety of the dam, especially with regard to people living downstream, Mr. Karunanidhi said State PWD officials were involved in the monitoring. Thanking his Kerala counterpart for taking note of the concern of Tamil Nadu to fulfil the irrigation and drinking water needs of the people who are dependent on river Periyar, Mr. Karunanidhi also drew Mr. Achuthanandan's attention to the Supreme Court's observation that there was no report to suggest that the safety of the dam would be jeopardised if the water level was raised for the present to 142 feet. — Special Correspondent

Consultative panel formed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has decided to form a consultative committee with V.J. Thankappan, MLA, as chairman and former MLA Prakash Babu as vice-chairman to suggest amendments to the Kerala Panchayat and Municipal rules and regulations, Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty has said. An official release issued here on Thursday said that Local Administration Principal Secretary S.M. Vijayanand, Kudmbashree Executive Director Saradha Muraleedharan, former Law Department Additional Secretary D. Sarath Chandran and P.K. Ravindran, Private Secretary to the Minister, are the committee members. Local Administration Secretary T.K. Jose is the convener.

DIC(K) convenes emergency meet

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) has called an emergency meeting of its general body at its headquarters here next Wednesday in the context of the discontent in a section of the party over the leadership's move to merge with the Nationalist Congress Party. KOLLAM: Protesting against the hike in fees by the Legal Metrology Department for sealing the weights and measures, traders under the banner of the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti will organise a dharna in front of the Legal Metrology office here on September 20, G. Janmashtami celebrated

GURUVAYUR: Hundreds of devotees thronged Guruvayur to have a darshan at the Sree Krishna Temple here on the Ashtami Rohini day on Thursday. Even though intermittent rains had marginally affected the flow of devotees, the day was celebrated with traditional gaiety and religious fervour in the temple town. The Guruvayur Devaswom had arranged a special feast for devotees to celebrate the birthday of Lord Krishna. There was a heavy rush for the feast and for booking the `unniyappam' which is a special offering at the temple on the Ashtamirohini day. Colourful `Uriyadi processions,' cultural programmes and special `Seeveli' processions were also held as part of the celebrations. — Staff Reporter

ENT surgeons' meet begins tomorrow

Kochi: The State conference of the Association of Otolaryngologists of India (AOI) will be held in Kochi from September 16 to 17.

At a press conference, organising chairman Nadarajan N.J, media coordinator Vinod B. Nair and organising secretary Praveen Gopinath said A.G. Pusalkar from Mumbai would deliver the keynote address. District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish will launch `The Bliss of Hearing,' a community service project of the AOI Kochi. C.K. Chandrasekharan, president, Indian Medical Association, Kerala, will launch `The Project Green,' an internet-based, e-networking project. — Staff Reporter
