Court says no to protests on college premises

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court restrained Shivaji college teachers and employees from holding dharnas and protests on the premises of the Delhi University college, holding legal the students' right to education.

Justice Anil Kumar allowed the writ petition by Shishupal, father of a student of the college, complaining against the teachers and employees of Shivaji College for holding the college premises to ransom.

The petitioner argued before the court that the teachers had joined hands with non-teaching employees, resorting to strikes, dharnas, demonstrations and shouting slogans in abusive and derogatory language.

It had brought the educational activities of the college to almost a standstill, the petitioner argued adding further, ``on account of the teachers not taking classes, half-yearly examinations were postponed''.

``Cumulatively, it can't be construed to be in the interest of and for the welfare of the students for which the teachers and the employees are appointed,'' Justice Kumar said. - UNI
