Two-day workshop on software development

Staff Reporter

Focus on best practices, case studies

CHENNAI: The Academic Staff College of VIT in association with the Computer Society of India, Division II of the Software and Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN), Vellore chapter, is organising a two-day workshop on `Software development - best practices and case studies' on September 29 and 30 at VIT, Vellore.

The workshop aims to address the gap between software engineering practices and education and research. A perceived reason for the gap is the situation that most practitioners face in having to develop software under demanding economic constraints, while a relatively lesser quality of software engineering education and research accounts adds to such constraints.

The other major reasons include poor adoption of the problem-based learning (PBL) model, lack of case studies that could be shared with software engineering educators, and the inability of developers to apply knowledge to new situations.

The workshop will seek to address these issues.

Renowned software specialists and domain experts from the industry and academia will discuss best practices, tools commonly used in the software industry, and case studies or real-life scenarios.

In a panel, software engineering specialists share their rich and varied experiences of novel methodologies and systems, and research activities.

The meet will also cover methods of using problem-based learning (PBL) and case studies approaches, and address all facets of software development with emphasis on software requirements analysis and requirement management, size and estimation techniques, software architectures and design including product line engineering, programming practices and coding standards, software inspection, verification and validation; and emerging trends and research directions in software engineering.

The workshop hopes to provide a discussion forum for software professionals, researchers and faculty members.

The resource persons will include researchers, authors and industry experts such as Waman Jawadekar, Senior IT Consultant and Chairman, Academic

Council, School of IT and Management, Pune; Ramesh Gopalaswamy, Adjunct Professor IIIT-Bangalore and Anna University; R. Srinivasan, Fellow and former President of CSI and formerly Chief Technology Officer, Software Development Centre, Tata-Elxi, Bangalore; and Srinivasan Desikan, Director-QA, Agile Software Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore, and visiting professor at IIIT-Bangalore.

For registration and details contact Prof. M. Adithan at asc@vit.ac.in; or call 0416 - 2202141, 2202372.
