CHENNAI
: In yet another case of a victim being conned into parting with his money, a businessman in the city was duped of Rs.4 lakh in cash on Thursday. The incident occurred at Kilpauk.
Police said Ashish Gupta (25), was driving his car after withdrawing cash from a bank in Anna Nagar, when a two-wheeler rider intercepted him near Halls Road-New Avadi Road Junction and claimed that there was an oil leak from the car's rear. Mr. Gupta parked the car and got out to check, little realising he was being duped.
When he got back into the car, he realised the cash bag was missing.
Similar cases
Kilpauk police have registered a case and are investigating. The city police only recently solved six similar in fact, almost identical cases reported from Anna Nagar, Thirumangalam and other areas after nabbing a gang, which was clandestinely monitoring persons withdrawing huge sums from a bank. With the help of the CCTV in the bank, the police zeroed in on the gangsters and recovered a portion of the money. They arrested six and are looking for four others.
A senior officer said the Kilpauk case could be the handiwork of the conmen they were looking for. A special team has been entrusted with the probe, he added.
