Staff Reporter

More than 20 lakh labourers in over 15,000 quarries in State

CHENNAI : The Tamilnad Kalludaikkum Thozhilalar Sangam, an association for quarry workers in Tamil Nadu, will be holding a meeting on Saturday and Sunday to discuss the problems facing quarry workers. The meeting will bring together leaders of trade unions, political parties, lawyers and activists at the ICSA Centre in Egmore to discuss the problems and seek governmental intervention.

The association has estimated that there are around 20 lakh quarry workers in the State in more than 15,000 quarries. In a statement released to the press, it quoted the Commission appointed by the Supreme Court in 1995 as having found two thirds of quarry workers to be bonded labourers in the State.
