CHENNAI: Water Expo, a three-day exhibition at the Chennai Trade Centre, showcases a range of products for industry, office and home water needs. From reverse osmosis membranes to quality testing equipment, the stalls offer the latest in technology for wastewater treatment, desalination and purification.

Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan and Environment Minister T.P.M Mohideen Khan visited the exhibition. Mr. Khan said industries must give priority to wastewater treatment to prevent the destruction of water bodies in Tamil Nadu. S. Rajamani, technical adviser to the Centre on environment, inaugurated the exhibition.

The companies that have displayed their equipment and services include Rochem, Doshi, Ion Exchange, Canadian Clear, Aqua Tech Systems and Fresh Water. Several visitors expressed interest in Watermaker, a product that "makes water from air" by drawing moisture from the atmosphere. Aston Fine Chem displayed low-cost equipment to destroy bacteria in drinking water through the use of iodine.

Exnora International's stall focussed on decentralised wastewater treatment systems and its successful implementation in various parts of the State. The system in combination with a biogas settler could be used to treat sewage to produce cooking gas and electrical energy.

The event is being organised by Water Today, an organisation that offers consultancy and conducts seminars on water needs, solutions and management.

The exhibition and a concurrent conference are on till September 16.
