NEW DELHI: The Government on Thursday approved road improvement works worth about Rs. 8.34 crore in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. The approval was given by Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, T. R. Baalu, who reviewed the progress made in the road development sector. A sum of Rs 3.73 crore has been sanctioned for the improvement of a road stretch on the Madurai-Rameswaram road on NH-49 in Tamil Nadu and another Rs. 4.61 crore was sanctioned for the improvement of a road stretch on NH-45A in Pondicherry Mr. Baalu said a sum of Rs. 574.47 crore was released to the various States and Union Territories in the first five months of the current financial year for the improvement of Non-NHDP (National Highway Development Programme) National Highways. He said the amount allocated for this purpose for 2006-07 is Rs. 1660.30 crore. Non-NHDP Highways are maintained by the State Public Work Departments across the country on behalf of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. In addition, for undertaking the maintenance and repairs of non-NHDP National Highways, a sum of Rs. 135.97 crore has been reimbursed to the States during the last five months.
