SIET to launch audio lessons for schools soon

G.Mahadevan

To prepare lessons on all subjects

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Institute for Educational Technology has readied audio lessons — based on the syllabus of standard 10 — for possible airing on All India Radio (AIR).

The lessons have been prepared in English and Malayalam as capsules of 20 minutes duration. Each capsule deals with one lesson. "During the 20 minutes an expert teacher would explain the basic concepts associated with the lesson in question. Afterwards, the teacher would also discuss questions that have come for the SSLC examination of previous years from that lesson and offer tips on how to answer those questions," director of the SIET Babu Sebastian told The Hindu here.

The SIET has finished recording the lessons. Discussions are now on with the officials of the AIR to see whether the lessons could be broadcast. If the response this programme receives from students and teachers proves encouraging the SIET has plans to prepare audio lessons on all subjects for the students of standard five to 12. The audio lesson package would be launched once the education department gives its final approval, Dr. Sebastian said.

CD project

The SIET, meanwhile, is also putting the finishing touches to its programme that seeks to extend the Institute's CD-Library project — now available for high school classes — to the lower primary, upper primary and higher secondary classes in the State. Dr. Sebastian said the programme would be launched by the end of this month.

According to this programme there would be a 50 CD package for LP and UP schools and 100 CDs for the higher secondary and vocational higher secondary classes. The high school CD library package has 150 multi-media CDs. There would also be six audio CDs for the visually challenged students from classes five to ten. These six CDs would be distributed free of cost to the schools that require them. In these CDs, special focus would be given on question-answer sessions, Dr. Sebastian said.

The package for the LP and UP schools would be priced at Rs.2,000 while that for the higher secondary and vocational higher secondary schools would cost Rs.4,000.
