TIRUCHI: Higher educational institutions must undertake Research and Development in Commerce and establish organic links with industry in order to meet global standards, K. Aludiapillai, a noted academic, said on Thursday.

Though research has been undertaken through Faculty Improvement Programme since 1985, the progress was slow compared to other disciplines. Against the backdrop of commerce graduates gravitating towards lucrative fields, including Business Process Outsourcing and Information Technology, institutions must devise a strategy to attract good teachers and retain a core bank of dedicated faculty to further research. Industries, on their part, must open up opportunities for internship and facilitate hands-on experience for students rather than criticising them, he said.

He was speaking after inaugurating a two-day UGC sponsored national-level seminar on `Commerce Education in the New Millennium - Challenges and Perspectives,' organised by the P.G. & Research Department of Commerce, Jamal Mohamed College. For infusing a global outlook, commerce students must be sensitised to the changing international scenario and initiated into adopting a multi-disciplinary approach to grasp the nuances of industry, trade and service sectors. Institutions must update curriculum, incorporating Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and interact with the outside world in a bigger way, having continuous interaction with business, industry, trade, financial institutions, chambers of commerce, and insurance companies, said Prof. Aludiapillai, who had earlier served as the Vice-Chancellor, Madurai Kamaraj University.

As a growing economy with a growth rate of 8.3 per cent, India offers enormous opportunities, he said envisioning a prominent role for the younger generation to take the concept of insurance to rural India. Industry, he said, requires readymade manpower for management and Human Resource needs, and wanted students to take advantage of emerging situations. At a holistic level, the college system in the country, which caters to 87 per cent of the 1.05 crore students (including about 18 lakh commerce students) undergoing higher education, should be strengthened, he said. Prof. Aludiapillai also released a souvenir on the occasion.

Presiding over, M. Sheik Mohamed, Principal and Head, Department of Commerce, said that institutions must strive to meet the expectations of professional entities such as the ICWA (Institute of Costs and Works Accountants of India). He acknowledged that global changes in the new millennium warranted enhancement of educational standards. N. Shaik Mohamed, seminar convenor, offered felicitations.
