Doctor allegedly commits suicide

NEW DELHI: An ayurvedic doctor allegedly hanged himself to death at his Mansarovar Park residence in North-East Delhi on Thursday. The police have not found any suicide note.

The suicide came to light around 9-30 a.m. when Omender Pal Singh Tomar's family members found him hanging from the ceiling. The police have initiated inquest proceedings.

Robbers arrested, firearms recovered

NEW DELHI: Two alleged robbers have been arrested by the Special Staff of the Central Delhi police. The police claim to have recovered a country-made firearm from their possession.

The accused, Jakir Abbas and Munajir, were arrested when they were moving in a Ford Escort car near Liberty Cinema on Wednesday. During interrogation, they allegedly confessed to their involvement in a robbery at Desh Bandhu Gupta Road on July 4, which they committed along with their accomplices Akram and Aarif. At their instance, the police claim to have recovered a stolen mobile phone.

Young men held

NEW DELHI: Two young men have been arrested at Najafgarh in South-West Delhi on charges of their involvement in criminal cases. A stolen motorcycle was allegedly seized from them.

Pradeep and his accomplice Vijay Kumar were moving on the stolen motorcycle when they were intercepted by a police team. They could not produce the papers of the vehicle. On their personal search, the police allegedly recovered two knives. During interrogation, Pradeep purportedly disclosed that he was involved in a robbery and an attempt-to-murder case registered at Uttam Nagar and Vikaspuri police stations, respectively. He came out of the jail in July.

DUTA strike continues for the third day

NEW DELHI: The four-day strike called by the Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) entered its third day on Thursday. The teachers are protesting against growing irregularities in Delhi Governmen-maintained as well as professional colleges.

Highlighting the issues of technical and professional colleges, especially "growing erosion'' of their academic and administrative autonomy, DUTA criticised the decline in the quality of members nominated to the Governing Bodies.

A delegation led by DUTA president Amar Deo Sharma met Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday and submitted a memorandum listing their demands.

DUSU panel polls on Sept. 29

NEW DELHI: Polling to elect 11 members of the Delhi University Students' Union's executive committee will be held on September 29.

The last date for receipt of nomination papers is September 21. The papers will be scrutinised and published the same day, while the last date for withdrawal is September 22. Counting of votes will begin immediately after the polling on September 29.

Jaswinder Singh, staff adviser to the Delhi University Students' Union, has been appointed Election Officer. R. C. Sharma of the Department of Linguistics has been appointed Returning Officer and Rajesh Tandon of the Department of Botany will be Additional Returning Officer.
