Silent protest by AIIMS students

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A large number of medical students, resident doctors and faculty members of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here held a silent protest demonstration on the Institute campus on Thursday demanding a transparent and impartial enquiry into complaints of harassment by students belonging to the reserved category.

The protestors under the banner of Progressive Medicos and Scientists' Forum also demanded formation of a students' grievance cell with members from the reserved category.

Problems faced

Speaking about the problems faced by students of the reserved category at the Institute, a student representative said: "A complaint of caste discrimination at the AIIMS Boys' Hostel was made to the Institute's director. He assured us of immediate action against the accused and formation of a students' grievance cell for prevention of such crimes in future. But no action has been taken till date and all efforts have been made to downplay the issue. The unofficial committee under a senior Institute official has been mere eyewash. It has been trying to force a compromise rather than investigate and dispense justice.''

The students added that the existing grievance cell at the Institute was highly incompetent as it did not have any representation from the reserved category.
