Over 100 staff, including senior nurses, resumed duty on Friday: Director Police prevented striking staff from holding agitation before administrative block, outpatient department

PONDICHERRY: A last-ditch effort on Friday, made by the police, to bring back the striking employees of the JIPMER for duty also failed as the employees stuck to their stand that the Union Cabinet decision to grant autonomy should be revoked.

In an unusual move, police roped in senior professors and department heads to hold consultations with the striking employees.

A team led by Additional Senior Superintendent of Police B. Srikanth first held talks with the Director, K.S.V.K Subba Rao, and proposed the idea.

After he gave his consent, the team held talks with the employees and asked to nominate six senior faculty members for having talks with them.

The police even arranged the venue for the meeting.

But within 15 minutes of parleys, the employees expressed their displeasure and decided to continue their strike.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Subba Rao had sought police protection for conducting walk-in interview to appoint temporary paramedical staff and to provide security to those employees, who wanted to join duty.

As per the request, the police prevented the striking staff from holding protests in front of the administrative block, outpatient department and casualty.

The Director told The Hindu that more than 100 staff, including senior nurses, resumed duty on Friday.

He further said more employees would join duty in the days to come.

Though the out-patient department remained closed, the doctors attended to a few patients at the casualty.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people turned up at the walk-in interview conducted to appoint temporary paramedical staff at JIPMER on Friday. The interview will continue for the next two days.
