Sharath Kamal exits

New Delhi : India's top paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal came up with a brilliant performance against World No. 9 Chen Weixing of Austria, but failed just short of pulling a major upset in the China Open at Guangzhou on Friday.

World No. 118 Sharath Kamal, who qualified for the main draw of the elite event here, lost the engrossing first round match 11-8, 7-11, 9-11, 14-12, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8 to bow out of ITTF pro tour event.

Other Indians in the singles draw — Soumyadeep Roy and Subhajit Saha — also bowed out after losing their opening round matches to top seeds. National champion Saha lost to World No. 1 and top seed Wang Liqin 11-3, 11-4, 11-2, 11-7 while Roy lost to Qi Chen 7-11, 9-11, 5-11, 6-11. — PTI
