KURNOOL: District Congress Committee under the chairmanship of Minister for Commercial Taxes Konathala Ramakrishna, who is incharge of Kurnool district, held a coordination meeting to review the arrangements for the visit of AICC president Sonia Gandhi to Kurnool city on September 27.

Mrs. Gandhi will formally open to public Kotla Vijayabhaskar Reddy memorial on the banks of Hundri river soon after her arrival from Kadapa at 2.50 pm. Later, she will address a public meeting at STBC college ground or APSP ground.

    Plea to MLAs

Mr. Ramakrishna urged the MLAs to take initiative to provide transport to public who were willing to attend the meeting as she was coming to the place first time after the Congress came to power. He asked the party leaders to sink their differences, if any, and make the meeting a grand success.

Touching upon the irrigation problems in the district, he assured the leaders that the Government was concerned about resolving the issues. Central Industrial Security Force would be deployed along the Tungabhadra Low Level Canal to prevent Karnataka farmers from drawing extra water.

    Consensus required

As long-term solution, the Government was examining the options of a parallel canal for Andhra Pradesh from Tungabhadra project, laying underground pipeline and modernisation of the canal. Since Karnataka was also a major beneficiary, a consensus was required to implement one of the solutions, Mr. Konathala said.

He said Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy wished to ground drought relief works in the district much before the National Employement Guarantee Scheme is launched next year.

Mayor and DCC president S. Raghurami Reddy, Congress MP Kotla Suyraprakasa Reddy, MLAs -- Katasani Rambhupal Reddy, M. Sikhamani, Kolta Sujathamma, Gouru Chariata and others were present.
