BYPL directs officials to ensure smooth functioning of offices

Some employees had tried to disrupt work during the past 3 days

NEW DELHI: The private power distribution company in charge of East Delhi and Central Delhi -- BYPL -- has directed its business managers to ensure smooth functioning of all its front offices and collection centres. The direction comes in the wake of reports that some employees had tried to disrupt work at some of the offices during the past three days.

According to BYPL Chief Executive Officer Arun Kanchan, assistant manager Anurag Gupta was physically assaulted by M. D. Gautam, district secretary of the employees' union, in the office of the Yamuna Vihar business manager on Wednesday.

"Unfortunately some vested interests are bent upon giving the incident an ugly face. They are turning the simple issue of indiscipline into a management-union issue.

They are causing disruption of work and thereby inconveniencing the customers by forcibly closing certain offices and cash counters," Mr. Kanchan added.

Expressing concern over the unruly behaviour of some employees, Mr. Kanchan said they were making all efforts to help their customers besides trying to end the impasse, but not at the cost of indiscipline.

"The employees who are causing disruption fail to understand that BYPL is a public utility and falls under the ambit of essential services.

The High Court has issued an injunction order prohibiting all employees from staging any form of demonstration within 150 metres of the office premises," he said, adding that all their business managers and staff members were committed to cooperating with consumers and providing them the best service.
