Three villages oppose MCC's abattoir project

Special Correspondent

An official protest will be launched on September 18

  • It will affect Kannagudde, Saripalla and Kandevu villages
  • 'Plot for project earmarked without public hearing'

MANGALORE: People from the villages of Kannagudde, Saripalla and Kandevu, have opposed the abattoir project planned by Mangalore City Corporation at Kannagudde. The "Kasayikhane Virodhi Vedike" will launch the official protest on September 18 when people from these villages will protest in front of the Mangalore City Corporation building.

The three villages are located in ward number 51 Alape of Mangalore City Corporation. They have nearly 1,000 families and 3,000 people living around the proposed project site.

The corporation has planned to acquire 10 acres of land in Alape ward, which is represented by Krishnappa Mendon. According to the president of the Vedike Vincent Cutinho, Mr. Mendon will also join the people in the protest.

According to leader of the Vedike, Praveen Kumar Kandevu, the Kannur ward, where the abattoir project was planned earlier, was best suited for the project.

    Project location

The location was away from where people lived. Mr. Kandevu said the present location was in the middle of the cluster of villages and if the project came up all the three villages would be affected. He said the people had no faith in the assurances given by the corporation that there would be no air, water and environmental pollution owing to the project.

Mr. Cutinho said this would also create communal tensions as 85 per cent of the people living in this cluster of villages belonged to non-meat eating communities and there was bound to be a social unrest among them if the project was launched.

He alleged that the corporation officials had earmarked the plot for constructing the project even without a public hearing and information to the local corporator Mr. Krishnappa Mendon.

The villages have already given representations to Mayor K. Ashraf and Commissioner Krishnappa Poojary against the project.
