VISAKHAPATNAM : Rich tributes were paid to renowned engineer Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya on his 146th birth anniversary celebrations organised by the Visakhapatnam centre of the Institution of Engineers (India)-IEI, here on Friday.

Andhra University College of Engineering principal Allam Appa Rao recalled the skills of Visvesvaraya in protecting the Vizag port from sea erosion, Hyderabad from floods and laying of the ghat road between Tirupati and Tirumala.

CBI SP in Vizag A. Sai Manohar said AP had the best disaster management plans in the country.

He said the focus of disaster management must shift from relief based to that of taking a proactive approach. As the day was also celebrated as the 39th `Engineers' Day', the local branch of IEI felicitated senior member of the organisation T. Venugopal Rao with a citation, memento and a shawl.

AU celebrated Engineers' Day with Vice-Chancellor L. Venugopal Reddy unveiling the statue of the famous engineer near the AU Engineering Department in the campus on Friday.
