GULBARGA: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will make a new beginning in the official celebrations of the Hyderabad Karnataka Liberation Day by unfurling the national flag at the Deputy Commissioner's office complex on Sunday, breaking the tradition of his predecessors avoiding the celebrations. Although the Liberation Day celebrations got the official nod in 1998, when the late J.H. Patel was Chief Minister, neither Mr. Patel nor his successors S.M. Krishna and N. Dharam Singh had participated in celebrations organised in the following years. Mr. Kumaraswamy has decided to break this jinx and add jest to the celebrations by participating in the function along with his Deputy B.S. Yediyurappa, Home Minister M.P. Prakash and a battery of Ministers from his Cabinet, including Sharanabasappa Dharshanapur, R. Ashok, Bandeppa Kashampur. The highlight of the Liberation Day celebrations is the invitation extended to Prince Fazal Jah Bahadur, direct descendent of the last Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan, who will participate as a chief guest. September 17 is considered a golden day in the history of the India as it this day in 1948 that saw the end of the resistance by the princely states to merge with Indian Union after Independence and saw the merger of the last of the Indian princely state of Hyderabad province merging with the Indian Union. The seventh ruler of the Asaf Jahi Dynasty Mir Osman Ali Khan surrendered meekly to the Indian Army after a feeble and short resistance of five days. On September 13, 1948, the then Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had ordered the Indian Army to move into Hyderabad Princely state to end the resistance put up by the Nizam to merge with Indian Union. The decision to despatch the Indian Army to renegade Hyderabad state was a sequel to events, which preceded the ultimate war against the forces of Nizam and his private army of Razakars led by Kazim Rizwi. Besides letting loose a reign of terror against the majority Hindus, the private army of Nizam also made a futile attempt to capture an Indian post in Chillakallu village on September 6, 1948 and this was the law straw for the Indian Government to act firmly against the Nizam.
Inauguration
The Chief Minister will also inaugurate the Inspector-General of Police office complex, constructed at a cost of Rs 3.22 crore and a shopping mall constructed by the Karnataka Housing Board on the Ring Road on the outskirts of the city. During his first visit to Gulbarga in June, Mr. Kumaraswamy who was scheduled to inaugurate the IGP office complex, cancelled it in the last minute owing to the absence of Mr. Prakash.
Foundation stone
The Chief Minister, who will lay the foundation stone for the proposed 1,000-bed Government General Hospital, is likely to clarify the Government stand on establishing a Government Medical College in Gulbarga.
