Official function to mark Liberation Day criticised

Special Correspondent

`Nizam surrendered to the Indian Army on September 18'

GULBARGA: The Udayonmukha Yuva Barahagarara Balaga (UYBB) on Friday protested against the participation of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa in the function to mark the liberation of the Hyderabad province from Nizam's rule on September 17 when the issue of the date on which the actual surrender took place remained unresolved.

`Falsifying history'

Founder president of UYBB Veerabhadra Simpi and other office-bearers addressing a press conference here, said according to historical facts and eyewitness accounts, the Nizam surrendered to the Indian Army on September 18 and not September 17.

Mr. Simpi, who is also president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, said participation of the Chief Minister in the celebrations on September 17 would amount to falsifying history and giving the official nod to the celebrations organised on a false date.

He criticised the organisers for inviting Fasal Jha Bahadur, descendent of the last Nizam to the celebration as chief guest, and said that this was an insult to the families of the thousands who perished under the brutal rule of the Nizam's. Mr. Simpi said volunteers of the UYBB would stage a black flag demonstration at the official celebrations. In a statement issued here on Friday, vice-president of the State unit of the IUML Abdul Hameed Dabur and president of the Gulbarga unit Mohd Nooh said the observation of the Liberation Day was against the secular fabric of the Constitution and would destroy the communal harmony in the region.
