Quake rocks Indonesia

JAKARTA: A strong earthquake rocked parts of eastern Indonesia, while a moderate quake rumbled deep undersea off the country's westernmost island on Saturday, the local meteorological agency said. Tsunami alerts were not issued and there were no immediate reports of damage from either quake, it said. A strong 6.2 magnitude quake, centred inland, jolted Seram island, 190 km northeast of Ambon, the provincial capital of the Mollucas islands, on Saturday afternoon, said Jajat Jatmika, an official at the agency. Although there was no damage reported, residents of Ambon said they felt the tremor that hit at 3:45 p.m. (0945 GMT), Mr. Jatmika said. Earlier in the afternoon, a 5.6 magnitude quake struck deep below the surface of the Indian Ocean, about 77 km southwest of Banda Aceh, at the northern tip of Sumatra island in western Indonesia, the agency said. — AP
