TIRASPOL (Moldova): Moldova's breakaway Trans-Dniester region asks its voters on Sunday whether they want to continue pursuing the goal of joining Russia, a referendum that critics warn could set a precedent for pro-Russian separatists in other ex-Soviet republics. Moldova, which fought a bloody war with the region's Russian-speaking separatists in 1992, has said it will not recognise the results. The European Union and the United States are also spurning the plebiscite. They are urging Trans-Dniester about twice the size of Luxembourg to return to negotiations aimed at giving the region broad autonomy but keeping it within Moldova. The West has warned that Moldova's territorial integrity must be respected. AP
