Referendum on reunion

TIRASPOL (Moldova): Moldova's breakaway Trans-Dniester region asks its voters on Sunday whether they want to continue pursuing the goal of joining Russia, a referendum that critics warn could set a precedent for pro-Russian separatists in other ex-Soviet republics. Moldova, which fought a bloody war with the region's Russian-speaking separatists in 1992, has said it will not recognise the results. The European Union and the United States are also spurning the plebiscite. They are urging Trans-Dniester — about twice the size of Luxembourg — to return to negotiations aimed at giving the region broad autonomy but keeping it within Moldova. The West has warned that Moldova's territorial integrity must be respected. — AP
