THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Chief Minister's office has clarified that Chief Secretary Mohammed Riazuddin had not been demoted. Mr. Riazuddin had only been relieved of his duties as Chief Secretary as he could not carry out his responsibilities. The Office recalled that Mr. Riazuddin had returned to the State after a long period of deputation to the Centre. The charge of no important department had been given to him during the tenure of the previous Government. The previous Government was forced to make him Chief Secretary on account of pressure from several quarters. It continued that Mr. Riazuddin had faced problems in carrying out his duties on account of the illness of his wife and his own health problems. He had to keep away from office even during the last Assembly session. He faced serious criticism that he could not function effectively as Cabinet Secretary and implement the decisions of the Cabinet in time. It was in view of this that he was relieved of the Chief Secretary's post and given another important responsibility. Mr. Riazuddin had been convinced of the situation by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan himself. Besides, the Cabinet had recorded its gratitude for his services. He was divested of the responsibilities only because it had become necessary for day-to-day functioning of the administration. Some people were misrepresenting the matter in order to put Mr. Riazuddin in poor light and campaign against the Government. They should desist from that, it added.
