Tantri case: remand extended

Kochi: The Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Saturday extended till September 30 the judicial remand of the three accused arrested in connection with the assault of the then Sabarimala Tantri, Kandararu Mohanararu, and extortion of money from him. The accused Sobha John, Anil Kumar and Vigil were produced before the court on Saturday.

The case is that the priest was forcibly taken to a flat near Valanjambalam here and assaulted. They also took his pictures with a woman to extort money. — Staff Reporter

Suitcase creates scare

GURUVAYUR: A suitcase in the pantry car of the Chennai-Guruvayur express train created a scare at Guruvayur Railway Station on Saturday. The pantry staff informed the station authorities about the suitcase, who, in turn, alerted the police and the Railway Protection Force. It was opened after the bomb squad detected no explosives in it, with the help of tracker dogs and metal detectors.

Later, it was found that the suitcase was of Sasikala from Kottayam, who alighted at Ernakulam on Friday from the Nethravati Express on her way home from Mumbai. Her suitcase was missing when she came out of a telephone booth at the station and had given a complaint to the police authorities in this regard. — Staff Reporter

Admission to LBS colleges

Thiruvananthapuram: The LBS Centre for Science and Technology has invited applications for admission to NRI seats in the B.Tech. course in its engineering colleges in Kasaragod and Thiruvananthapuram (only for women). The application forms can be had from the colleges on payment of Rs. 500, or downloaded from www.lbskerala.com. Downloaded applications should be accompanied by demand drafts for Rs. 500 each. The completed application forms should reach the Principals before September 25. The applicants should have secured the minimum mark prescribed by the University of Kerala or the Kannur University, depending on the institution to which they are seeking admission. Those who have not appeared for the entrance examination may also apply. Details may be had from the centre's website. — Staff Reporter

DIC(K) activists join Congress

KOLLAM: A group of leaders and cadres from the Pathanapuram mandalam unit of the Democratic Indira Congress(Karunakaran) (DIC-K) returned to the Congress fold on Friday. They declared they had joined the Congress at a function at the Congress Bhavan here. DCC president Sooranad Rajashekaran presided. — Staff Reporter

Help centre inaugurated

KOLLAM: Kollam MP P. Rajendran on Friday inaugurated a help centre for higher education at the Civil Station complex here. District Collector B. Srinivas presided. The centre will offer guidance to students and parents on higher education courses. It will function under the supervision of a Deputy Collector. — Staff Reporter

Pilgrims block bus service

PATHANAMTHITTA: Service from the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) depot in Pathanamthitta was affected for around 10 minutes on Saturday evening when nearly 100 Sabarimala pilgrims blocked the buses parked at the stand, alleging official apathy towards their repeated plea for transportation arrangements to Pampa. The protestors alleged that they waited for two-and-a-half hours for a Pampa-bound bus. — Staff Reporter
