Archbishop's apology

HYDERABAD: Archbishop of Hyderabad Most. Rev. Marampudi Joji on Saturday apologised to Muslims, assuring them that the speech of Pope Benedict XVI "was not intended to offend" them.

The Archbishop, who called on Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy and Y.Qureshi, Chairman, AP State Minority Commission, said he had expressed `deep felt regrets' to those who were hurt by the Pope's speech. "On behalf of six million members of the Christian community in Andhra Pradesh I convey my apologies to Muslim brethren ". — Special Correspondent

SSI awards

Hyderabad: For the first time, Andhra Pradesh has bagged five national awards given by the Ministry of Small-Scale Industries for outstanding small units. The award-winners are: P.Srinivasa Rao, M/s. Acer Engineers, Medak (packaged drinking water), P. Koteswara Rao, M/s.Legend Drugs and Formulations Pvt Ltd, 17/3RT, S.R.Nagar, Hyderabad (pharma products), T.Ramachandra Prabhu, M/s. Chaitanya Packaging Pvt Ltd (packaging), which were given awards for quality products, D.Vidyasagar, M/s, SEC Industries Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad (R&D), P.Raja Rajeswari, M/s.P.B.C.Marketing and Services Pvt Ltd, shed no.1/b, IDA Phase III, Patancheru, Medak district (special recognition award).

The awards, carrying a cash prize and a citation, are to be presented at a function in New Delhi on October 7 . — Special Correspondent

Electrocuted

VIZIANAGARAM: Y. Sobha Rani (35), a civil surgeon in TB Hospital and her mother Paripoornamma (60) were electrocuted at their home near St. Joseph's English Medium School here on Saturday. Dr. Sobha Rani came in contact with a live wire while trying to spread wet clothes on the terrace. Her mother too was electrocuted while trying to save her. — Correspondent

`No decision on college closure'

HYDERABAD: No decision has been taken on closure of 22 Government junior colleges or groups in these institutions, D.Chakrapani, Commissioner, Intermediate Education, said in a press release here on Friday. He issued the clarification following reports in a section of the press on the closure.

DSC objections

HYDERABAD: The Director of School Education on Friday said that the last date for receiving objections on DSC-2006 Teachers Recruitment Test was September 21. Candidates should file objections on the answers given in the key through online on website: www.aponline.gov.in, according to a press release. — Staff Reporter

Training for teachers put off

HYDERABAD: Training classes for teachers under the Children Learning Acceleration Programme for Sustainability (CLAPS) have been postponed to October.

The postponement was ordered by the School Education Department on a plea that teachers would be held up in their native places on account of the festival.

Naxal couple surrenders

Srikakulam: A naxal couple, Battina Mohana Rao and Padma surrendered before police. Both belong to Bathupuram village in Uddanam, a naxalite stronghold. Battina Mohan Rao is a member of area committee.

Explosives seized

ANANTAPUR: The police seized 36 gelatin sticks, 100 kgs of ammonium nitrate and about 30 metres of wire from a house at Yadiki here on Saturday. The house had been locked for about three months. Staff Reporter

Rocket launchers untraced

KURNOOL: The rocket shells and launchers delivered here on June 6 remained untraced. The private transport staff handed over the consignment to a person identified as G. Kumar, which reached Kurnool from Chennai. The weight of the bags was recorded as 180 kilos. The consignment could have comprised 80 pieces.

Temple burgled

KADAPA: Burglars broke into Sri Someswara temple at Devunikadapa late on Friday night and stole gold, silver ornaments, headgear of the presiding deity, silver utensils including the `theertham' vessel and hundi collections of Rs. 10,000.

Priests detected the theft early this morning on finding the temple doors broken open.

Temple manager S.A. Pratap lodged a complaint with the police.

Finger print experts and CLUES teams have been pressed into action.

New SP for Anantapur

ANANTAPUR: The State Government has posted M. Stephen Ravindra as the new Superintendent of Police to Anantapur district, replacing Sanjay Kumar Jain, who has been transferred to CBI on deputation.

A 1999 batch IPS officer, Mr. Ravindra was the SP of Warangal since December 2004.

Mr. Jain handed over the charge to DIG of Anantapur N. Jayarami Reddy on Thursday night.

5-hour power cut in municipalities

TIRUPATI: The Tirupati circle of the Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited has announced that power cut will be effected for five hours in municipal towns henceforth, in order to provide electricity for seven hours to the farm sector.

In Chittoor district, power disruption will be enforced in the municipal areas of Puttur, Nagari, Madanapalle, Palamaner and Punganur towns from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and again from 3 to 5.30 p.m. — Staff Reporter

16 cases settled

KADAPA: Retired Judge of High Court Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy settled 16 land acquisition cases here on Saturday and awarded compensation of Rs. 4.98 lakhs to persons displaced by Somasila project.

Lok Adalat settles ten cases

CHITTOOR: The Lok Adalat, held here on Saturday on the premises of district court, has settled 10 cases - of which 2 were civil, 6 MVOP and 1 criminal.

The total compensation covered in these cases was Rs. 5,45,000. — Correspondent

Crafts Bazaar from Thursday

Tirupati: An `All India Crafts Bazaar' will be held at Urban Haat (Hasthakalaramam) here from September 21 to 30, coinciding with the Tirumala Srivari Brahmotsavams.

Cultural programmes like `Pulivesham', `Kolatam', `Karrasamu' and `Dappulu' will be conducted concurrently by the Department of Tourism, while professionals and amateur artistes will perform Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam concerts on all the days. — Staff Reporter

Ozone protection day observed

Kakinada : It is the responsibility of everyone in the world to protect the ozone layer, said M. R. Prasanna Kumar, district educational officer. He was participating as chief guest at a function held at the district science centre here on Saturday to mark the ozone day celebration. Y. Venugopalarao, headmaster, Mahatma Gandhi Corporation High School, presided.

Indiramma houses by March-end

Kakinada : East Godavari Collector M. Subrahmanyam has asked officials to ensure the completion of construction of all the houses sanctioned under the Indiramma scheme by next March-end. He was reviewing the progress of Indiramma scheme and various welfare schemes at a meeting of the district officials of various departments and the MDOs here on Friday.

Kakinada : Dak Adalat is being organised to redress the grievances of people at the office of the Postal Divisional Superintendent at 2 p.m. on September 27, according to Syed Khalil Saheb, Postal Superintendent.

Dharna staged

Srikakulam : Telugu Desam Party leaders headed by district unit president Tammineni Sitaram and party legislator, Kinjarapu Acheyya Naidu and former Minister Gundla Appala Suryanarayana staged a dharna in front of the Transco superintending engineer's office here on Saturday to protest against alleged power mismanagement.
