BJP surprised over TRS' continuance in UPA

Special Correspondent

Suspects `understanding' between Sonia and KCR

  • BJP to put up candidate for Karimnagar Lok Sabha byelection
  • Party to hold districtwise dharna for nine-hour power
  • Four-member panel to study situation in Rayalaseema

HYDERABAD: The State unit of the BJP on Saturday expressed surprise over the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) continuing in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) even after two TRS Union Ministers, K.Chandrasekhar Rao and A.Narendra, quit the Cabinet and Mr. Rao the Lok Sabha.

At a press conference here, party president N.Indrasena Reddy wondered why the TRS was not withdrawing support to the UPA. He suspected an `understanding' between UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Mr. Rao and accused them of `deceiving' the people of Telangana.

    Dharna for power

He wanted the understanding to be made public. He said the BJP would put up a candidate in the Karimnagar Lok Sabha byelection if Mr. Rao `really quits' the Lok Sabha.

While charging the Government with lack of planning on power generation, which led to the recent crisis, he said the BJP would organise districtwise dharna demanding nine-hour power supply to the agriculture sector and payment of compensation to ryots whose crops were damaged on account of Government's failure to provide timely power.

Mr. Reddy criticised Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy's statement that those participating in the ryots' agitation against erratic power were activists of political parties.

    Panel report

Referring to the drought in Rayalaseema, the party, he said, was deputing a four-member committee to study the situation and submit a report.

    G. Kishan Reddy, MLA, N. Venkataswamy, former MP, Parthasarathy, ex-MLA, and Shanta Reddy, BJP National Executive member, would be the members.

On the Pothireddypadu head regulator issue, the BJP leader wanted the Government to convene an all-party meeting and indicate its stand .
