GUNTUR: Four persons were washed away in Vogeru Vagu at Pasumarru village of Chilakaluripet mandal in Guntur district on Saturday afternoon when a portion of the old bridge over the stream collapsed along with 10 persons standing on it. While six of the 10 persons who fell in the water flow could swim to safety, four could not be traced till late in the night. One of the six, who swam to safety or was saved by locals, was bitten by a snake. Traffic on the Chilakaluripet-Chirala State Highway was completely stalled following the collapse. Three of the four who were washed away were identified as Konakanchi Hanumantha Rao, 50, Konakanchi Naganjaneyulu, 18, and Kumbha Anil, 15, all hailing from Pasumarru village. The fourth one could not be identified.
Work on new bridge
The bridge was partially damaged 30 years ago and temporary repairs were carried out and a new bridge was under construction alongside. Traffic on the bridge was stopped on Friday for some time, but it was restored later.
