KOLLAM: A.S. Menon, vice-president of VSNL, inaugurated the research labs attached to the Research and Development wing of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham at Amritapuri near here on Friday. The new robotics lab to pursue research activities in developing robots was also inaugurated on the occasion. The Amrita Research Labs (ARL) is a Research & Development Centre of Excellence that undertakes technology development projects of importance with the support of national scientific institutions. The ARL undertakes projects in the areas of information security, wireless sensor networks, distributed computing, real-time operating systems and wireless embedded systems. ARL work is supported by scientific institutions such as the Department of Science & Technology, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Board of Research for Nuclear Sciences, Technology Information Forecasting & Assessment Council and Konkan Railway Corp. The ARL is a major supporter of the open source movement and has developed expertise in key components of open source software technologies. The new facilities will give opportunities for students to undertake challenging projects and to secure guidance in their projects from ARL researchers. The Robotics Lab is set up with the primary objective of encouraging students and faculty members to undertake research activities. Kerala University final year B.Tech. examination 2006 batch rank holders from Amrita Institute of Technology and Science were felicitated at the function. K.B.M. Namboodiripad, Dean, Amritapuri Campus, welcomed the gathering and K. Sankaran, Principal, Amrita School of Engineering, proposed a vote of thanks. Jayaraj, chief technology officer, Amrita Research Labs, and Josh Freeman, faculty member and expert in Robotics, also spoke on the occasion.
